In 1979
a heart-breaking display of dead reptiles
turned one man's life around
with no trees for shelter or shade
the snakes died from intense heat
after a flood had quenched the sand
such a vision pained a sensitive heart
so much so he transported red ants
to improve a barren land's soil
and proceeded to plant bamboo
after a few years of solitary labour
the bamboo steadily grew
encouraging him to plant trees
again the years passed
along came deer and vultures
with many endangered animals
such as tigers who later birthed cubs
elephants who brought thunder to earth
over thirty years slowly faded
as he planted a tree each day
though those years were not without altercation
Molai defended his forest and animals within
as he would his own sons or daughters
deforestation has and still is slowly ripping out
the lungs of a now vulnerable Mother Nature
scientists believe humanity shall see a sixth extinction
statistics portrayed by mainstream media are deceptive
there is no more running
we have turned away from chances
one jagged breath
at a time
even ants fear to help us now
they dread our directionless footsteps
